May 30th is National Rescue Dog Day, a shout out to all the rescue pups out there and, more so, an opportunity to bring attention to those still waiting for their forever homes. It’s true that you don’t know what you’re getting when you adopt a dog – in fact, these 5 went on to become famous!
- Benji – Real name Higgins, this sweet boy was rescued from Burbank Animal Shelter by an L.A. dog trainer named Frank Inn. Inn went on to train Higgins’ daughter, who continued his legacy in the Benji films.
- Old Yeller – k.a. Spike, was found in a Van Nuys, CA shelter and went on to make people everywhere bawl their eyes out.
- Winkle – This little teddy bear was found roaming the streets by a magazine photographer and went on to appear on newspapers and TV – including a hit HBO series!
- Rin Tin Tin – The original Rin Tin Tin was found with his mother and four siblings in a shelter in France that had been bombed in WWI. Upon their arrival back to Los Angeles, the soldier who rescued him took him to a dog show where Rin impressed the audience with an 11 ft jump; the soldier was approached by a filmmaker and the rest is history.
- Jake the 9/11 Rescue Dog – Famous for his work during 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina, Jake was found on the street with multiple injuries. His new owner trained him to be a rescue dog and he served for almost 10 years.
Not to mention the numerous celebrities, like Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth, Chelsea Handler, Amanda Seyfried, John Legend, and George and Amal Clooney, who proudly rescued their pups.
