Fall Travel: Pet-friendly hotels versus pet-friendly Airbnbs

Men and His Dog Friend

We love a good vacation, but we especially love the ones we can take our pets on. Austin, TX, is considered to be one of the most pet-friendly cities in America, with many hotels and Airbnbs accommodating pets of all species. However, depending on the type of pet you have and the type of traveler you are, some stays are better than others. Here’s our guide to the best pet-friendly hotels versus Airbnb’s in Austin, TX.

Cost plays a factor. On average, hotels can be around 50% more expensive than an Airbnb, and this can be the first factor for many individuals when discerning where they want to stay. Yet, we’ve found that Austin provides pet-friendly hotels and Airbnbs covering the entire low-to-high cost spectrum, which is great news. However, Airbnbs can add extra taxes and fees right before checkout, so this is something to keep in mind.

Outdoor spaces are important. If your four-legged friend is in need of a place to roam, we’re in favor of Airbnbs. The guest can select a stay based on backyard inclusion as a search filter, and this is an easy way to find a stay with room for you and your guests. While many pet-friendly hotels have amenities for pets, this isn’t synonymous with a good old fashioned backyard.

Group travelers still have a social meter. If your dream stay includes you and your dog, hotels may be an easy option to afford privacy, togetherness, and isolation from a larger group. While Airbnbs can be comfortable, they can include upwards of 20 people in one singular stay. This affords less privacy to those who want to break away from a large group with their pet for some solitary time.

Know what kind of traveler you are. While some folks look back at their one room, 12-guest, rickety bed abroad in a hostel with fond memories many prefer a little more luxury. This can also be true for those bringing their pet, if your pet needs a luxurious bed to sleep on or other amenities. While both hotels and Airbnbs can skyrocket in price and provide a luxurious stay, location will determine what is in your price range to meet your specific needs.

Location, location, location. Both hotels and Airbnbs offer prime locations for exactly the type of vacation you’re looking for. However, if your main goal is socialization for a large event, such as New Year’s Eve, we can’t help but give our point to the hotels. These larger stays can often have wonderful amenities such as rooftops and bars (or even a rooftop bar), which can be a great opportunity to mingle and socialize with others. However, if your goal includes less social interaction, an Airbnb is the option for you.
