When it comes to water, all dogs are not created equal. Some dogs, like labradors, can jump in and know exactly what to do while others, like bulldogs, run the risk of sinking (seriously.) If you’re considering a dog and water happens to be a big part of your life, whether you boat, live near a lake, or just enjoy bringing your pet along for the adventure, it’s important to know which dogs can’t get enough and which dogs can do without a day on the water. Here are the top 5 water-lovin’ pooches – you’ll be surprised!
- Standard Poodle. Derived from the German word “pudeln” which means “to splash”, it’s safe to say Poodles don’t shy away from water.
- Newfoundland. They may look made for snow, but Newfoundlands are such apt and strong swimmers they were once required at lifeguard stations along the British coast. Now if shedding is a problem for you, you may want to keep looking.
- Chesapeake Bay Retriever. With a near-waterproof coat, Chessies can swim and dive in cold water and are considered the toughest of the water retrievers.
- English Setters. These babes were literally bred to retrieve game in English moors – it’s in their blood to jump right in!
- Irish Setter. A combination of some of the best traits from several breeds, Irish setters are just as comfortable and energetic in water as they are on land.
Also rounding out the list was the Irish Water Spaniel, Portuguese Water Dog, Labrador Retriever, and Golden Retriever. Dogs notoriously bad in water include Pugs, Basset Hounds, Corgis, Chows, Bulldogs, and Dachshunds (to name a few.) So do your research! We always recommend getting an animal that fits right in with your lifestyle, so if water is part of your summer activity list we hope you can find the perfect pooch to accompany you.
